  1. Look for keywords in job postings

When writing a resume, the best place to start is by looking carefully at the job postings that you are interested in. As you apply for different jobs, notice the job description written for each post, look for keywords that employers are looking for in their ideal candidate. Once you have highlighted these keywords, include them in your resume to make it stand out.

  1. Review resume examples of your industry

To write the perfect resume, study examples of resume from the industry you want to go to for inspiration. Make sure to understand all you can from those examples to know what best to include in your resume. List your experience accordingly highlighting the one matching your industry the most.

  1. Use a professional font

Employers only have a few seconds to quickly review your resume. Therefor the resume needs to be clear and easy to read. You should use a basic font like Times New Roman or Arial and keep the font size between 10 to 12 points. This gives the resume a more professional look. Any unnecessary white space should be removed to increase the focus of the reader on the content and not the blank spaces.

  1. Include only relevant information and put the most important information first

It is important to keep your resume as brief possible without leaving out any key information. Managers who are hiring only go through your resume for a few seconds. Thus, it is important to make sure not to include any irrelevant details or any information that has now become out dated. Irrelevant details have the ability to distract the reader from the key informational to what is not important.

  1. Use active language

To make your resume stand out even more, make sure to use an active language when writing your resume. Meaning, use words that are powerful, such as achieved, accomplished, earned and more. This leaves a positive impression on your reader about your skills along with making it sound professional.

  1. Only include subheadings and sections you need

In your resume, make sure to use subheadings and sections that you need for that particular job description and remove the ones that you don’t. Example, instead of writing both a resume summary and an objective you should only focus on one of these as they are partially the same thing. Thus, eliminate any and all headings that seem irrelevant to you.

  1. Proofread and edit

The last thing to do before finishing up writing your resume is proofreading it. When writing something, human errors and mistakes are natural. To make sure your resume is free of any errors and mistakes read it several times. Once you have edited and revised it yourself, make sure to ask a second person to go through your resume. A third party can help you recognize how your resume will be reviewed by any employers as well as give their opinion on how it can be improved.
